October in Louisville: Things to Do Around the City This Month

There’s something special about October in Louisville. The temperatures cool down, fall color begins to spread across the city, and some of our favorite neighborhoods come alive with festivals, art, seasonal traditions, and Halloween celebrations.

From Old Louisville and the Highlands to NuLu, Norton Commons and Iroquois Park, Louisville Portfolio presents a few things happening around the city this October.

Whether you're looking for a family outing, a fall date night or simply an excuse to get out and enjoy the city, here are a few events to add to your calendar.

St. James Court Art Show

October 2–4

A Louisville fall tradition, the St. James Court Art Show returns to the historic streets of Old Louisville for its 70th year. More than 600 artists will showcase work across a variety of mediums, all surrounded by the beautiful architecture and tree-lined streets that make this neighborhood so distinctive.

Admission is free, making it an easy way to spend a fall afternoon exploring art, architecture, and one of Louisville's most historic neighborhoods.

Oktoberfest

October 2

Add a little Bavarian flavor to your October plans with Oktoberfest in Norton Commons. Food, drinks, music and a festive neighborhood atmosphere make this one an easy addition to a fall weekend.

Norton Commons is already made for strolling, so this is also a great opportunity to enjoy the neighborhood, grab something to eat and make an afternoon or evening of it.

Haunted Hike

October 4

Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve kicks off Halloween season with its annual Haunted Hike. This family-friendly event features a Fairy Tale Trail with treat stations, face painting, seasonal activities and plenty of reasons for the kids to arrive in costume.

It’s a fun way to enjoy the outdoors while getting into the Halloween spirit without anything being too spooky for younger visitors.

Belknap Fall Festival

October 9–10

The Belknap Fall Festival brings two days of neighborhood fun to Douglass Loop in the Highlands. Expect live music, local food, artists and vendors, along with family-friendly activities throughout the festival.

It’s one of those events that feels distinctly Louisville—local, relaxed and centered around community.

HalLOUween Parade & Fest

October 10

Halloween takes over NuLu during HalLOUween Parade & Fest. The celebration includes live entertainment, a fall market, food, family activities, and plenty of costumes before the Halloween parade makes its way through the neighborhood in the evening.

With activities throughout the day and the parade at night, this is one you can easily build an entire Saturday around.

Chunkin’ Pumpkins

October 11

Pumpkins flying through the air along the Ohio River? It doesn't get much more fall than that. Chunkin’ Pumpkins Pumpkinfest returns to Captain’s Quarters with its signature pumpkin launch, live music, local vendors, kids’ activities and more.

The event also supports Twisted Pink and Hope Scarves, two Louisville-based organizations supporting those impacted by metastatic breast cancer. We’re proud to share that Louisville Portfolio’s Lynette Masterson is one of this year’s event sponsors, joining the community in supporting a fun Louisville tradition with an important cause behind it.

Come out, enjoy a fall day along the river, and support a great local cause.

Jack’s Lantern Trail

October 1–November 1

After dark, Iroquois Park becomes a glowing fall experience during Jack’s Lantern Trail. Thousands of illuminated pumpkins, locally carved creations, and larger-than-life displays transform the wooded trail into an immersive Halloween experience.

This is one to plan ahead for, particularly if you want to visit on a weekend evening.

Boo at the Zoo

Select Nights in October

For families with little ones, Boo at the Zoo is a Louisville Halloween favorite. The Louisville Zoo hosts its after-hours celebration on select nights throughout October with trick-or-treating, festive attractions and plenty of opportunities for costumes.

It's a fun way for younger children to enjoy Halloween festivities in a family-friendly setting.

Halloween on Hillcrest

Throughout October

No ticket required for this Louisville tradition.

Each October, Hillcrest Avenue transforms as residents go all-out with elaborate Halloween decorations. Skeletons, lights, graveyards and larger-than-life displays have made the street a favorite destination for anyone who loves Halloween.

Take an evening stroll, enjoy the creativity, and remember that Hillcrest is still a residential neighborhood—so be respectful of the people who make this Louisville tradition possible.

Enjoy October in Louisville

One of the things we love about Louisville is how much there is to experience within its different neighborhoods. October makes that especially easy to appreciate. You can spend one weekend surrounded by art and historic architecture in Old Louisville, another enjoying a neighborhood festival in the Highlands, and the next celebrating Halloween in NuLu or beneath the trees at Iroquois Park.

We hope this gives you a few ideas for getting out and enjoying Louisville this month.

Because for us, knowing Louisville is about more than knowing its real estate. It’s knowing the neighborhoods, traditions, and experiences that make this city feel like home.
